The Rising Powers in International Development (RPID) Senior International Associate programme had a very successful first year. The first two Associates are both highly experienced analysts of health and social policy. Xiulan Zhang is the Director of the School of Social Development and Public Policy at Beijing Normal University. She works closely with the Ministries of Civil Affairs and Health and has been involved in many aspects of China’s social sector reforms. In this report, an outline of the experiences and achievements of each Senior International Associate follows a general discussion of the programme. Professor Zhang was selected because of her wide experience as an analyst of Chinese social and health policy and her close collaboration with policymakers in that country. In addition, the School of Social Development and Public Policy, of which she is a Director, has already established a postgraduate course on development studies for students from a variety of low and middle income countries.en_GB
