Food access and nutrition policy/programme linkages in Malawi
Abstract
The Government of Malawi is committed to improving the food security and
nutrition of its population. In 1986, a high level Symposium on Nutrition was held
for all Principal Secretaries to discuss the magnitude and nature of the nutrition
problems in the country. A key recommendation from this Symposium was that a
Food Security and Nutrition Unit (FSNU) be established within the Department of
Economic Planning and Development in the Office of the President and Cabinet.
This Unit would be responsible for maintaining an overview of food security and
nutrition related policies, undertake policy analysis, formulate policy and disseminate
relevant information to the appropriate authorities.
