This paper examines selected aspects of the urban structures and processes that have evolved since the turn of the twentieth Century in some of the larger Muslim cities of the Middle East. An account of some of these urban centers prior to the twentieth Century has been given in a previous issue of this journal (Cowiey, 1979). The definitions of 'towns', 'cities' and the 'Middle East region' provided in the earlier paper, are retained in the present discussion of contemporary urban developmentsen_GB
