Summary Summary The author traces the evolution of US policy towards Nicaragua since the Sandinista revolution, analysing the shifting pattern of political support and opposition within the United States and the impact of the Iran?Contra affair and the Guatemala Accord, He argues that the policy of the Reagan administration reflects both the Cold War and an earlier US strategic motive to control affairs in Central America, whereas the post?Vietnam policies of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party had moved in an anti?interventionist position. Thus the outcome of the debate over policy towards Nicaragua is of fundamental, strategic political importance for US relations with the Hemisphere.
