This paper examines the relationship between inequality and collective action, and identifies a range of mechanisms that shape the association between income inequality and local collective action. These include (i) individual motivations to participate in collective action groups, (ii) group-level cooperation and trust, and (iii) the efficiency and coordination of collective organisations. The paper proposes in addition an agenda for future research on the links between inequality, social cooperation and collective action.en
