This exploratory paper outlines some types of action to improve the performance of existing canal irrigation systems, and asks how to identify the best choice, mix and sequence of actions for a particular system. Current disciplinary orientations and appraisal practices are examined, and their tendency to overlook the full range of options. Proposals are presented for using techniques of rapid rural appraisal, and those who conduct appraisals are urged to write about and share their experiences.en_GB
