Perspectives on Nicaragua's Foreign Trade

Abstract

Summary Summary The economy which the Sandinistas inherited was characterised by a dependence on agro?exports. The growth of agro?exports provided the economic base for the Somoza regime while at the same time leading to the dispossession and impoverishment of the peasant population. The requirement for foreign exchange, for oil and other imports which were vital to the revolutionary process, convinced the Sandinistas of the importance of sustaining agro?exports, while at the same time developing non?traditional exports and diversifying their markets. The challenge they face is to ensure that agro?exports are not incompatible with social transformation, agrarian reform and the development of food production. Resumé Resumé Perspectives sur le Marché Extérieur du Nicaragua L'économie dont les Sandinistes héritèrent, était caractérisée par une dépendance à l'exportation de produits agricoles. La croissance de l'exportation des produits agricoles procurait la base économique du régime de Somoza, alors qu'elle entrenait la dépossession et l'appauvrissement de la population paysanne. Les conditions imposées par le marché des changes, pour le pétrole, et autres produits d'importation vitals à la procédure révolutionnaire, conduirent les Sandinistes à la conclusion de l'importance du maintien de l'exportation des produits agricoles, tout en développant l'exportation de produits non?traditionels et la diversification de leur marché. Le challenge auquel ils font face, c'est d'assurer que l'exportation agricole ne soit pas incompatible avec la transformation sociale, la réforme agraire et le développement de la production pour l'alimentation.
