The Role of MSMEs in the Context of the Clean Energy Transition in MENA: The Lebanon Case Study
The Lebanon case study will focus on how MSMEs are adjusting to the phasing out of energy subsidies and the reversal of the country’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels amid a rapid widespread installment of RE systems, most commonly solar (photovoltaic). It will investigate the current policy and regulatory frameworks that can boost this decentralized transition and examine governance structures at the central and local levels. Yet, it will not only focus on the MSMEs working within the energy sector, but also covers some sectors that have flourished in recent years despite the crisis, particularly the agri-food sector. This research uses a multidisciplinary approach that considers several other relevant socio-economic characteristics as part of its quantitative work (such as income and level of education), while trying to investigate the involvement of women and youth in the current transition processes.
