Small piped water systems in rural areas are found in various countries including Ghana, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Senegal and Uganda. Systems vary in size and the population served, with scheme types including those with a single communal distribution point, scheme with multiple communal distribution points, schemes with multiple distribution points and household connections, and multi-village schemes.

This review evaluates some of the factors that contribute to the sustainability of small piped water systems in rural areas.
