This is a report of a study of racially mixed neighbourhood in Durban (Botanic Gardens) the main objective of which is to assess the effect of proximity on behaviour and attitudes of residents, with particular attention to the possible effect of those conditions which are present in the South African context, but absent from the American context (from which the study type is derived), such as the official attitudes of disapproval towards interracial contact in South Africa, where the Group Areas Act has come into law. The neighbourhood at the commencement of the study was roughly half White, one third Indian and the remainder of mixed ancestry or Coloured. The area lies close to the centre of Durban.
