Tried, then Abandoned: Economic Liberalisation in India

Summary: Rajiv Gandhi's plans to cut back the system of controls which curtail market forces in India have largely failed, partly because he has been irresolute and maladroit in pursuing this goal, but mainly because the interests opposing it are too powerful. But the recent emergence of redistributive programmes in many Indian states suggests that the developmental state lives on there.
