Introduction This Symposium, I believe, is very relevant to present-day economic- conditions in Rhodesia. Manufacturing as we know (and this is shown in Appendix I) is an extremely important contributor to Gross Domestic Product, its contribution in 1968 being 20%. Together with agriculture, which is equal[y important—although here I propose to gloss over the searing effects of the 1968 drought—these two sectors are responsible for the production of some 40% of the country’s wealth. Mining and quarrying offered only 6%, although this excludes some beneficiation of minerals which has been included in the industrial sector.

A RJE symposium paper on the effects of industrial growth on the then Rhodesia's agricultural sector. Paper Presented at Symposium on: Industry in Rhodesia, June 11& 12, 1969.
