The study sought to identify the kinds of knowledge and skills possessed by or lacking in persons serving as laboratory assistants in Zimbabwean schools in relation to their effective functioning. Data was obtained through focused group discussions and questionnaires within the framework of a national survey. The informants were 124 designated laboratory assistants, 79 heads of science departments from different high schools and regions and 9 science education officers. The main finding was that these assistants require in- service education in basic repair and service of equipment, preparation of chemical solutions, general laboratory management skills, and safety and calibration of equipment.
