Summaries This article has a threefold purpose. First, it highlights some aspects of Gordon White's contribution to development studies. Second, it outlines some of the more enduring concepts and approaches that Gordon developed in the course of his research and illustrates their wider validity. Third, it moves on to demonstrate some of the practical applications of his ideas and their policy relevance.
